Cookie Policy

Last updated: 31 July 2026

1. What cookies are

Cookies are small text files a website stores on your device. Similar technologies — local storage, pixels and device fingerprinting — do much the same job, and everything in this policy applies to those too.

2. Our approach

No analytics or measurement cookies are set until you tell us it's okay. When you first arrive, a banner asks for your choice, and nothing beyond the strictly necessary cookie below runs until you respond. Declining costs you nothing — the calculator works exactly the same either way.

3. The cookies we use

Strictly necessary

These are needed for the site to function and are set without consent, as UK law permits.

NameSet byPurposeExpires
CookieConsent Cookiebot (Cybot A/S) Stores which categories of cookies you agreed to, so we don't ask you again on every page 12 months

Analytics — only with your consent

These help us count visitors and see which features get used. We use Google Analytics 4, delivered through Google Tag Manager.

NameSet byPurposeExpires
_ga Google Analytics Distinguishes one visitor from another using a randomly generated ID 2 years
_ga_[MEASUREMENT ID] Google Analytics Maintains the session state so a visit isn't counted twice 2 years

Advertising — only with your consent

This site is funded by advertising. We use Google AdSense, which sets cookies to measure ad performance, limit how often you see the same ad, and — if you agree to personalised advertising — select ads based on your interests.

NameSet byPurposeExpires
__gads / __gpi Google AdSense Measures ad interactions and limits repeat ads Up to 13 months
IDE / test_cookie Google DoubleClick Measures ad effectiveness and, with consent, personalises ads Up to 13 months

If you decline advertising cookies you will still see ads, but they will be non-personalised — selected from the page content and your general location rather than your browsing history. Google publishes the full list of cookies it uses for advertising in its advertising cookie notice.

4. Changing your mind

You can change or withdraw your choice at any time — it is exactly as easy as giving it in the first place. Use the cookie settings link in the banner, or clear this site's cookies in your browser and reload the page to be asked again.

5. Controlling cookies in your browser

Every major browser lets you block or delete cookies. The instructions live in your browser's own help pages, under Settings → Privacy. Blocking all cookies will not break this calculator, though it does mean you'll see the consent banner on every visit.

6. A note on UK law

Since 5 February 2026, the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 has allowed some purely statistical, first-party analytics to run without prior consent, provided visitors are told clearly and can object. That exception is narrow, and a standard Google Analytics 4 setup does not fall within it — so we ask for your consent instead.
